Dallas Cowboy Mailbag: Halfback is a Major Concern

Question: I think our running game is paramount for Tony Romo’s success (See Troy Aikman/Emmitt Smith)! What do you think? – Rusty

Rusty, I couldn’t agree more. The Cowboy’s will require a running game if they wish to succeed in 2013. The good news is DeMarco Murray provides that needed run game – when he’s healthy. Sadly Murray has not been able to stay healthy for the Cowboys. Last season the loss of Murray was very impactful and debilitating to the run game. Former 1st rounder, Felix Jones was unable to pick up the slack and the running game fell to the bottom of the league.

Today’s NFL is tilting more and more to the passing game. Elite QB’s can make up for a non-existent run game through consistent, patient, and accurate passing. Aaron Rodgers is an excellent example. Rodgers has won a Super Bowl without the assistance of a run game. Tony Romo cannot. Romo is a very good QB. He has more than enough talent to win a Super Bowl. But he cannot do it without balance.

Joseph Randle may be the key to this offenses success. We hope Murray can stay healthy for the entire season but history has shown that will not happen.

Randle will need to fill Murray’s shoes in a way Jones never could.
