Yu Darvish almost had another perfect game on his hands this afternoon in Houston. It wasn’t nearly as heart-breaking as earlier in the year when he lost his bid with 2 outs in the ninth inning. This time he lost the perfect game in the 6th with a questionably called walk that subsequently led to an AJ Pierzynski ejection. The no-hitter lasted until the eighth inning when Carlos Corporan launched a solo homerun to right field.
Yu pitched the game in brilliant fashion. He struck out a career-high 15 batters and did so with great command and effective use of his fastball.
It would have been great to see Darvish get his no-hitter but it was clearly best long-term that he wasn’t pressured into pitching the complete game and recording another high pitch count game.
Darvish has proven he is one of the best pitchers in the game earlier in the season and has continued to build on that reputation as he continues his dominance in the season’s second half.
According to ESPN, Darvish already has 17 games with 10 or more strikeouts in just 52 games. That’s a pretty impressive pace for a young pitcher just entering his prime.
The question is no-longer, Can Yu Darvish be as great as Nolan Ryan?
But rather, Can Yu Darvish be BETTER than Nolan Ryan?
