Who would have thought we would be here? Whether you think back to August when Texas had a strong grasp of the division or just 10 days ago when the free-fall pushed the Rangers out of the playoff mix altogether – this is not an expected spot to be in.
On Sunday the Rangers won their seventh straight game forcing a tie for the final Wild Card spot and adding an eighth must-win game to the schedule. Tonight the Tampa Bay Rays will face the Rangers in Arlington for 1-game tie-breaker which will determine who gets the privilege of competing in the 2013 MLB Playoffs.
Making the Playoffs as a Wild Card may not sound very glamorous but after a season of ups and downs, the Rangers and their fans are grateful for the mere opportunity of the Wild Card.
The Rangers have been showing grit and determination during their improbable run. The starting pitching, the bullpen, the defense, and the bats have all played their part. You won’t have to think back very far to remember how bleak things looked.
Whether you believed in them then or not is almost irrelevant. The Rangers believed in themselves and that’s all that matters. They fought through a very tough time. When it looked like they were once again falling apart in September (much like last year), they mustered up the will to win and got here.
It’s true, they really did fall apart much like last year. Worse in fact. But this year they fought for the chance and are ending the regular season on a good note. Last year – not so much. This is a different team and they have a different energy.
The Rangers cannot afford to exhale yet. One game against David Price and the Tampa Bay Rays will determine their future. Will they live to play another day or is this all they have left?
You Gotta Believe.
