Dallas Stars Mailbag:

The Stars look like they are too young to compete this season.

This is an argument made by some and shared by many. I don’t happen to be in either group. I’m aware the Stars haven’t looked great in this extremely fresh season . I’m also aware the Stars are one of the youngest teams in the league. I’d be blind if I didn’t see the massive roster overhaul that took place this offseason. I’d be dumb to think it this integration of players wouldn’t take time.

But with all of this – I still expect the Stars to make the playoffs in 2014.

Maybe I am dumb…

The new acquisitions made were headlined by young, talented players holding varying degrees of potential. This obviously sets the stage for the future. But what about the present?

The reason I’m so optimistic is based primarily on the veteran support. There is just enough of a veteran presence to make this work now. Veteran forwards and defensemen are sprinkled in with the abundance of youth and potential.

Together with All-Star goalie Kari Lehtonen, the veterans and the youth can produce results right now. This team needs time to gel. It needs time to improve.

I fully expect to see them improve as the season progresses. We will see amazingly good games and amazingly bad games peppered in. Be prepared for a bit of a rollercoaster. In the end, the Stars will make the playoffs. It will obviously be a lower seed but even that will be a welcomed sight to players and fans alike.

Give the Stars and chance and don’t be so quick to judge. It’s a long season for this unfamiliar team. They will have plenty of time to grow and prove themselves – this season.
