The Cowboys are fortunate to have their bye week later on in the season this year. Recently they have had their week off early in the season and as far as I am concerned that doesnt do much good. They will have an opportunity to get healthier and they will have time to prepare for the home-stretch. Dallas has a tough 3-game stretch before the break starting with this weeks bout in Detroit, followed by the Vikings at home and a trip to New Orleans. They must find a way to win AT LEAST 2 of these games.
The Cowboys play all 3 of their division foes and the Packers and Bears following the bye. There is not a lot of room to stumble down the stretch. Never-mind the division, they have to find a way to be more consistent week in and week out. Winning the division at 8-8 and bumbling into the playoffs isn’t going to create much confidence. That is why they have to find a way to take at least 2 of these games, so they can gain some confidence and some momentum.
Dallas is far from having this division on lock-down and a stumble down the road could open the door for one of their enemies to swoop in front of them. I would not count out any of the teams in this division (although the Giants are close to being finished), the Redskins or Eagles could get hot in a hurry. So the Cowboys need to start building a cushion and a strangle-hold in the East.
It seems as though Kiffin is starting to figure out his personnel and how to use them. He has used more man-coverage in the last few games and it has paid dividends. If the D can continue to improve and the offense stays on-track then they should win on a consistent basis.
If the Cowboys want to avoid a week 17 playoff game for the third consecutive season then it is up to them to make that game irrelevant, unless of course it’s for a bye in the tournament.
