I know, it was just a game, but for a night the Dallas Mavericks showed some encouraging signs that this season might be a good one; the most encouraging of them? Monta Ellis.
On his debut with the Mavs, Ellis put on a show in company of Dirk Nowitzki, to beat the Atlanta Hawks. Together, they scored 56 of the 118 points of their team.
Even more, that’s hope.
Good’ol Dirk hasn’t have an offensive partner as talented as Ellis since… er, since… well, I’m not sure about the name of that guy on the German national team in 2004.
That’s my point.
The championship year of these Mavericks was one of those things that happen. A great playoffs run; everybody coming together at the right moment; Nowitzki playing his best basketball ever; similar to those playoffs runs of the New York Giants culminated by a couple of Super Bowl victories against the Patriots.
They got hot at the right time.
I’m not saying that this team inspires championship talk. Not even close to that. Not yet, at least. But, if Nowitzki can stay healthy, this could be a fun season for Mavs’ fans.
Sure, Ellis is not Dwight Howard, but he still brings something that was much needed in Dallas: exciting basketball.
The Mavs will go as far as Dirk and Monta take them. If they develop a good chemistry between them, they will pose an interesting threat to any team.
They won’t be unstoppable, but hard to stop, for sure.
For a franchise that seemed to go nowhere after the Dwight Howard snub, that’s more than expected.
