Dallas Cowboys: The Bruce Carter Benching Has To Stop

Oct 13, 2013; Arlington, TX, USA; Dallas Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett celebrates a victory with linebacker Bruce Carter (54) against the Washington Redskins at AT

Jason Garrett can talk all he wants about how well Ernie Sims practices it does not matter.  Bruce Carter is a better linebacker than Ernie Sims and always will be.  Sims is not a playmaker, he never has been and he never will be.  Sims has value coming off the bench and in some sub-packages and that is all.   It is foolish of the Cowboys to carry this on any further.

It all started in the game against the Chargers when Danny Woodhead had two scoring catches with Carter in coverage.  The coverage was actually really good on the part of Carter, on both plays the passes from Phillip Rivers however were right on the money.  If you want to give a QB like Rivers time in the pocket then this is what is going to happen, I would say that the pass-rush had a hand in these plays as well.  Remember it’s a team game.  I can’t possibly imagine what the Coaches are seeing in practice for this to continue, it seems pretty stupid to me.

If Jason Garrett and Company were trying to send a message then I think the message was received.  Carter came off the bench against the Vikings and totally out-played Sims, not even close.  Sims tackling was a joke in that game, and besides experience he just doesn’t bring much to the table.  Bruce Carter is much more athletic and younger, he needs to play down the stretch for the Cowboys.  I realize that the scheme change has affected Carter’s play and that he needs to adjust and play better, but that growth needs to happen on the field not on the bench.

If the Cowboys want better and more consistent play from guys like Bruce Carter and DeMarco Murray then they have to be given the opportunities, those opportunities need to come now!

I agree with Garrett when he says that players should not play based on where they were drafted and what not, but this is beyond stupid.  If Ernie Sims was out there flying around and making a difference then sure but that is not ever going to happen.  Wake up coaches!

Carter was toast against the chargers. His coverage was terrible on both plays. When the back flies out of the back field he has to get deep fast and was burned for 2 easy scores. Sims may not be better than carter but when someone plays like that you have to bench them.

    • TheJaikster

Name any linebacker EVER that would have had better coverage on those throws, look at the tape my man. Cant stop a perfect pass.

    • ctcowboy1968

Carter was right on Woodhead on the first deep TD pass. It was a perfect throw. Can’t blame Carter on that one. If Carr gives up two TD passes in a game do the coaches bench him? NO!! Carr already sucked against Megatron. I don’t see Carr on the bench.

  • SmartThinking

Garrett’s the coach. His benching of Carter was well deserved, in my opinion. Carter’s comments about his benching on this forum and in others tells me that he, in fact, doesn’t get it and he, somehow, considers Garrett to be singling him out. Well, yeah! Even though Carter’s the better ball player, but if he continues to play tentatively and without heart, as he has so far this year, then his future is on him and he deserves what he gets. Again, in my opinion, Carter, Claiborne, Murray, Bernadeau, and a half dozen other half assers on this team deserve to sit until they get the big picture, which, oddly enough, seems to escape them all. These guys are all college graduates. If they can’t be motivated to play better, then they deserve to be shipped out to other teams who’ll have less expectations of them.

    • TheJaikster

I think he benched him to send a message, from here on out Carter will play. This scheme change has been his problem, I don’t remember any complaints last year.

Well until you do know what the coaches see on the practice field, and in the team meetings, and during film study, THEN decide what is stupid and what is not. Until then, you’re only doing it to yourself bro! If there were no complaints last season about Carter (a MLB next the Sean Lee last season), then there would have been less of a need to sign (and then RE-SIGN) Sims last season. I agree that you can not stop a perfect pass, but maybe there was something not done in film study or during team drills that gave the coaches pause.

        • TheJaikster

Was just commenting on the fact that Garrett had said that Sims had earned the right to play through is great practices. Well if that does not translate on game-day then it is worthless. Sims has done nothing, there is no gain in playing him over Carter, none at all. I agree Carter had a couple of rough games, but Sean Lee did earlier this year too. I would rater see Holloman on the field than Sims! Thanks for reading!

as I covered in my article the underneath has been a weak spot. If Bruce isn’t the beat option to stop it I get it. But Bruce has the athleticism, so he needs to play and adapt better.

  • ctcowboy1968

Carter needs to play. He can be a playmaker flying around and making solid tackles. Though Durant and Sims play a lot, they never show up in the stats. They are invisable. Wouldn’t mind seeing Holloman out there. He is definitely a playmaker.

    • David Kerr

Durant plays on the opposite side. Holloman is injured.

      • ctcowboy1968

Thanks for the Holloman update. I did not know that. I realize that Durant plays the strong side. He just doesn’t show up the stat sheet. Last year he was a tackles leader for Lions.

        • David Kerr

Yeah I thought Durant would be more productive in this D too. At least he’s healthy.
