Dallas Cowboys: The Bruce Carter Benching Has To Stop

Oct 13, 2013; Arlington, TX, USA; Dallas Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett celebrates a victory with linebacker Bruce Carter (54) against the Washington Redskins at AT

Jason Garrett can talk all he wants about how well Ernie Sims practices it does not matter.  Bruce Carter is a better linebacker than Ernie Sims and always will be.  Sims is not a playmaker, he never has been and he never will be.  Sims has value coming off the bench and in some sub-packages and that is all.   It is foolish of the Cowboys to carry this on any further.

It all started in the game against the Chargers when Danny Woodhead had two scoring catches with Carter in coverage.  The coverage was actually really good on the part of Carter, on both plays the passes from Phillip Rivers however were right on the money.  If you want to give a QB like Rivers time in the pocket then this is what is going to happen, I would say that the pass-rush had a hand in these plays as well.  Remember it’s a team game.  I can’t possibly imagine what the Coaches are seeing in practice for this to continue, it seems pretty stupid to me.

If Jason Garrett and Company were trying to send a message then I think the message was received.  Carter came off the bench against the Vikings and totally out-played Sims, not even close.  Sims tackling was a joke in that game, and besides experience he just doesn’t bring much to the table.  Bruce Carter is much more athletic and younger, he needs to play down the stretch for the Cowboys.  I realize that the scheme change has affected Carter’s play and that he needs to adjust and play better, but that growth needs to happen on the field not on the bench.

If the Cowboys want better and more consistent play from guys like Bruce Carter and DeMarco Murray then they have to be given the opportunities, those opportunities need to come now!

I agree with Garrett when he says that players should not play based on where they were drafted and what not, but this is beyond stupid.  If Ernie Sims was out there flying around and making a difference then sure but that is not ever going to happen.  Wake up coaches!
