Editor’s Prediction

This game has great potential to get really ugly, really fast. The Dallas Cowboys and their struggling defense travel down to the Big Easy to take on the high-flying Saints. The Saints are easy favorites because of one player – Drew Brees

Brees is having a fantastic season so far. If it wasn’t for Payton Manning’s epic rebirth, everyone would be talking about Brees for league MVP. He spreads the ball evenly across the field forcing defenses to pick their poison. When in doubt, the ball often gets dunked down to one of the Saints many versatile RBs. Jimmy Graham provides a mismatch everywhere on the field and requires constant double teams.

This Cowboys defense (that recently made Christian Ponder look good) will have their work cut out for them. Their only hope at success is to force turnovers and pray the Dallas offense scores 40 points. Speaking of the Dallas Offense…

While the Dallas Offense statistically ranks high, the reality is they have been struggling as of late. The recent loss of OG Brian Waters has all but destroyed the running game – a running game the Cowboys desperately need to rediscover if they want to keep Drew Brees off the field.

To start, Murray and the running back corps will get their carries whether they can successfully run or not. The Cowboys just can’t afford to be one-dimensional again (Referring to last week when they rushed only 9 times). Look for some draw plays in an attempt to keep the defense honest.

By the second half, Dallas will shift into Shoot-out Mode and abandon the run game. Expect Rob Ryan to blitz creatively but not recklessly. He knows Romo hates blitzes up the middle and will focus the pass-rush accordingly.

Prediction: Dallas 28 New Orleans 34

You’re precisely right about the loss of Waters. Waters’ loss to this team is deeper and more impact full than many are willing or capable of seeing. His loss has crippled any running game the offensive line maybe could have generated. But, here’s the really sad truth: with Waters out and Romo unable to generate a running offense, by the third or forth series, Dallas has been backed up on the field to a point where the punts and following returns give the opposition significantly better field position than earlier in the year when Waters in in the offensive line up. Then, the team is expecting the defensive line and secondary to hold things together and stop the onslaught and, boom, Dallas gets burned for points after just a couple of long passes. This is the problem with this team and it can be traced directly back to the loss of Waters on offense.
