Beside Church, Lee, and Hatcher there really no stars on this defense. Barry Church had been a pleasant surprise this season and maybe the only player that been dependable. Lee is having another Pro Bowl season but missing time. Hatcher is playing relatively well within this scheme and having a Pro Bowl season. Beside them, who can you name that is worthy of the “star” on the helmet? – Maurice
It’s a tough to hand out any praise with the defense playing so poorly but I’ll try. Barry Church has indeed been a pleasant surprise but I wouldn’t call him a star yet. Comparatively speaking he looks great on this defense but I’m not sure he’s worth the Pro Bowl spot he’s currently in the running for. I still love the guy and love his contract. He will be a Cowboy to build around.
When healthy, Lee is also a star and I agree that Hatcher has been playing great this season (although he has recently faded). Demarcus Ware is having a terrible season but I have to believe he’s still a star on this defense. He appears less than 100% but still has the speed. I think he will bounce back next season. One of Sport DFW’s top writers, Jake Wall, thinks otherwise and says Ware is done. Hey, we’ll see. Ware’s contract says he comes back next season because it would be too much to cut him.
Other than that you are correct. Fans expected Bruce Carter, Brandon Carr, and Morris Claiborne to all be stars this season. Before they were lost, Anthony Spencer and Jay Ratliff were also expected to be stars. So, I think we can agree the top players were very disappointing this season.
Blame should go all around. Monte Kiffin should get the bulk of it but it’s a cop out to pin it all on him. Players also need to be held responsible.
