Scouting Report: Kony Ealy

With the offseason underway, it is draft/free agency season. In this segment, “Scouting Report”, I will be posting scouting reports of who I believe the Cowboys should covet in the 2014 NFL Draft. Stay tuned daily, as I will be writing a few per day.

Michael Sam & Kony Ealy make up one of the best 1-2 punches in the NCAA when it comes to rushing the passer. Ealy has freakish athletic ability. Despite being a junior, Ealy is one of the most intriguing prospects in the draft.

– 6-5, 275 pounds

– 4.77 40-yard dash

– 9 tackles for loss

– 5 sacks

– High draft rating because of potential

– Freak athletic ability

– Quick

– Extremely lengthy

– Shows good initial step off the ball

– Long arms

– Can close on ball carriers

– Extremely inconsistent

– Has trouble diagnosing the run

– Needs to tackle better

– Needs to use his arms more

The Fit

At first, Ealy was a guy I really liked because of his athletic potential. He reminds me of Ezekiel Ansah of the Detroit Lions. All in all, Ealy is a guy I cannot trust because of his inability to be consistent. I believe there are better options than Ealy. Ealy has proven to be a boom-or-bust prospect for April’s upcoming draft. I would stay away from Ealy, unless he puts on a consistent performance during his draft workouts.

Scout Grade: 80/100
