Just Look At The NFL Playoffs

So here we are as fans watching the playoffs from our living rooms. I know like myself many fans out there are not happy. There has been quite the discussion this offseason as to the first round pick and there seems to be two sides, one for a QB and one for defense. I firmly sit in the defense camp, as I am sure many Cowboy fans do. If Dallas wants to get into the playoffs they need to look at who is in the playoffs.

This teams still in are the Seahawks, Panthers, 49ers, and Saints from the NFC and the Patriots, Broncos, Chargers, and Colts from the AFC. In the NFC every team is in the top 5 of the NFL in defense. In the AFC all four teams are in the 20-25 range. Many experts have said the NFC is stronger this season, mostly because of the defense.

Now I know many out there will point out that the AFC teams have franchise QBs, and if the Dallas Cowboys could get one like that they would be much better. Except there is a few things that are failed to be pointed out. The Broncos have Manning, which was picked up in free agency. The Pats have Brady, who was selected late in the draft. The Chargers have Rivers, who was a draft day trade, and they had a terrible year to get to the top of the draft to get him…well Eli, for the trade. The Colts also tanked to get Luck.

The one thing every team in the playoffs have is sacks. Dallas ranked 25th this year in sacks and 17th in interceptions. Those paltry numbers, mixed with 27th in rushing and 30th in passing defense made Dallas one of the worst defenses in history. It is pretty blatant that defense is the biggest need for this team.

I am not in denial that we need a young QB to groom. I just think this year Dallas can afford to take a late pick on a good one and not give up the obvious need for defense. I do not see two DTs going to Dallas in the first two rounds, however I could see a DT/DE or S/DT in the first 2 rounds in any combination.

If the Dallas Cowboys want to make the playoffs they just have to look at who is in it. These teams have really good defenses, and while many have good QBs, we do have one of the top ranked QBs in Tony Romo. We are all not sure what his health will be like, but improving the defense now and playing with what the team has will at least build a base for when Tony is no longer the starting QB and we find that next one.
