With the offseason underway, it is draft/free agency season. In this segment, “Scouting Report”, I will be posting scouting reports of who I believe the Cowboys should covet in the 2014 NFL Draft. Stay tuned daily, as I will be writing a few per day.
Despite only being a redshirt sophomore, McKinney is expected to declare for the NFL Draft. Bleacher Report’s Matt Miller has McKinney going to the Dallas Cowboys in the first round. The problem with McKinney is that he could be a boom-or-bust pick, which will not well with Cowboys fans around the world.
– 6-5, 235 pounds
– 4.56 40-yard dash
– Redshirt sophomore
– #8 on Bruce Feldman’s Freaks list
– Arrived freshman year as a QB
– Can play in a 4-3 or a 3-4
– Extremely long
– Tall & athletic
– 41.5 vertical
– Good speed
– Good first step
– Would need to bulk up at the next level
– Still young
– Needs to develop a go-to move
– Needs to hit better
I don’t agree with Matt Miller on this pick. I think the Cowboys have to pick someone who will be able to make an impact right away. Yes, potential is great. But, the Cowboys need production fast. By selecting a more conservative player like Trent Murphy or Will Sutton, this team will benefit much better.
Scout Grade: 80/100
