Dallas Stars Mailbag: Did Olympic Hockey Create More NHL Fans?
I saw that you were pushing Olympic Hockey pretty hard. Do you think it brought more fans to hockey and do you think you will increase coverage of the Dallas Stars?
It’s true, we really did push Olympic hockey a couple weeks ago. Olympic hockey is so great and so equally unappreciated. It’s a collection of the world’s best, condensed onto patriotic all-star teams. Unlike normal all-star games, these games matter a great deal to the players and fans. You can see and feel the effort and energy on the ice.
Sadly, I don’t think it made much of a difference in the end. If Team USA were to have beaten Canada and advanced to the Gold Medal round, it would have been a different story, but alas it wasn’t meant to be.
Hockey is a financially stable and growing sport but it still has many barriers to overcome to even approach the other top sports in the US. In other countries, kids grow up playing hockey as their main sport. In the US, hockey has largely remained out of the high school system and therefore missed out on its primary growth potential.
As for Dallas Stars coverage increasing – that too will be a slow build. We are currently searching for a writer to focus primarily on Dallas Stars Hockey, but they are not always easy to find. I will also continue to chip in with the occasional article on the Stars too. In the meantime I encourage everyone to check out http://blackoutdallas.com/ on a regular basis for some great daily coverage on the Dallas Stars and keep spreading the word on this great sport.
If the Stars can make the playoffs and make some noise in the postseason, we should see a revitalized fanbase almost instantly. It’s not like Dallas has a football team that’s going to make the playoffs anytime soon…
