No news to report yet. After leaving Seattle last week without a deal, All-Pro DE Jared Allen decided to take the weekend to contemplate the situation. As of Monday night Allen appears to still be contemplating.
Allen, 32, entered free agency looking for a contract in the DeMarcus Ware/Julius Peppers ballpark. That translates to roughly 3 yrs/$30M. With 128.5 career sacks, and 11.5 in 2013, it’s easy to see why he deserves that money. At age 32 it’s easy to see why teams aren’t lining up to pay him. It’s safe to say the offers received are a bit underwhelming to Jared.
As he mulls his decision on which team to sign with, he’s also entertaining the idea of retiring altogether. Many who know him say he isn’t likely to walk away but it still remains a possibility. Seattle is still the most likely destination. The defending Champs can surround Allen with a great team and a legitimate shot at winning a Super Bowl.
Dallas offers more playing time and a bigger market, but no realistic shot at a Super Bowl in the near-future. A third team is involved also but it’s identity is unconfirmed. Together with retirement as a fourth option, Allen has some decisions to make. The Cowboys are unlikely but still in the conversation.
It wouldn’t make much sense for the Cowboys to add a short-term older player to replace Ware at DE but if the money is right – so is the move. Allen’s answer could come as soon as tonight or as late as after the draft.
