Soto and Profar injuries impact on Texas Rangers

Joe Camporeale-USA TODAY Sports

Whether you believe this is the curse of Nolan Ryan or Ian Kinsler has a voo-doo doll of Jurickson Profar, the news of Jurickson Profar and Geovany Soto being out 10-12 weeks due to injuries is very concerning for this Texas Rangers ballclub. Especially since Elvis Andrus has been sidelined from throwing for second time this spring with elbow soreness. Ron Washington hasn’t really been provided with a good bench. The back-up middle infielders are veterans but don’t have great career numbers.

Josh Wilson, Brett Lillebridge, and Adam Rosales are you options to take over for Profar. J.P. Arencibia is Soto’s back-up catcher and he has some power and pop in his bat. However, he has never hit over .233 and is almost guaranteed to strikeout over 100 times. Behind him you have Robinson Chirinos who has only played in 33 career major league games. It’s not as big a hit behind the plate with Arencibia taking over for Soto, but Profar’s loss could cause major problems.

Adam Rosales has a major league contract so looks to be the one taking over for Profar. This is the worst possible situation. Profar didn’t break out last year compared to how Mike Trout and Bryce Harper had when they debuted. This year was supposed to be his break-out season. He was guaranteed to be the everyday 2nd baseman, which most thought would help him concentrate more on his approach at the plate. In Rosales career he has 821 total at-bats with 180 hits and 186 strikeouts. Yes you read that right; Rosales has more strikeouts than hits in his career.

The line-up is being leaned upon heavily this season with the rotation being hit with an injury to Holland and Harrison coming off 2 back surgeries. Yu Darvish was also just scratched from his start last Friday and should be ready for opening day, but the club is unsure when and how much he can throw before then. Tanner Scheppers has been one of the best performers this spring and has earned a rotation spot. Michael Choice has also shown that he could be an everyday player with his spring performance. Injuries have headlined this spring and looks to have taken several wins away from this club.
