With only a month to go until the NFL Draft, it seems like a good time to review the roster and assess the WR situation. Miles Austin’s departure leaves the Cowboys in an interesting position heading into the 2014.
Today we continue daily profiles of the Dallas Cowboys’ WR unit. In the end we hope to answer the following questions:
Do the Cowboys need to bring in a reliable veteran to fill Miles Austin’s shoes? Is Terrance Williams able to fill Austin’s shoes as the #2 WR? If Dez Bryant is lost to injury will the Cowboys be able to survive? Who on the current roster is most likely to breakout in 2014?
Look for those answers next week. We will start at the top of the depth chart and move down as the week progresses. Today we take a look at Tim Benford
NFL Seasons: 1
2013 Receiving Statistics: none
Tim Benford is someone who the Cowboys are quietly fond of. The rookie out of Tennessee Tech wasn’t able to contribute much in 2013 but has earned the opportunity to fight for a roster spot in 2014.
Benford is a good example of a longshot with a chance. The Cowboys are sure to bring in competition in 2014 either through the draft or as undrafted free agents.
Benford will need to stay healthy, play solid special teams, and prove he can line up on the outside in the X and Z receiver spots.
Benford isn’t particularly big but can play in traffic and runs crisp routes. He isn’t spectacular in any one way but he has a natural feel for the game and holds less risk than most other options. In his College Pro Day he posted a somewhat surprising 4:48 40 time as many questioned his speed on film. He proved he has enough speed to make plays from the outside but needs to apply that to the practice field this summer. Competition will be fierce.
2014 Projection: It’s tough to see Benford make the team in 2014. The Cowboys are expected to bring in young competition and aren’t afraid to go shallow at WR if nobody steps up. Likely Training Camp Casualty.
Tomorrow: Lance Lewis
