Are the Dallas Mavericks Destined to Face the Spurs in the Playoffs

First things first. The Mavericks haven’t even locked in a spot in these Playoffs yet but when has that kept us from rampant speculation?

The Mavericks will likely finish in either the 7th or 8th spot in playoff seeding. If it is indeed the 8th spot they would face the San Antonio Spurs who hold the #1 seed. The same Spurs who just swept the season series 4-0 (oh yeah, and the season before that too). Facing the Spurs would be an awfully unfortunate ending to the season.

If the Mavericks claimed the 7th playoff spot (still also possible) they would face the Oklahoma City Thunder. Against the Thunder the Mavericks have a 2-1 series record and reason for first round optimism.

The actual seeding is yet to be determined but tonight’s game will essentially tell the story. Tonight the Mavs play the Phoenix Suns. The Suns are also battling over the last two spots in the playoff race and are neck in neck with our beloved Mavs.  The Mavs need to win for a shot at the 7th seed. If the Mavs lose they not only are looking at the 8th seed but also could miss the playoffs altogether.

Tonight is the equivalent of playoff basketball. It matters. Big Time. 2 games remain and the Mavs need to win both if they want to avoid the Spurs.

So, first prize is the Thunder and second prize is the Spurs. I’m totally against tanking, but if third prize is Clint Capela I won’t be crying.
