Blase came to the Brahmas franchise as a third round draft pick of the Texas Tornado when the team called Frisco, TX home. He had spent the previous year with the St Louis Jr Blues. The 6’ 0” – 210 pound defenseman put up 2G – 5A in his rookie season despite missing significant time to be with his younger sister Clare who lost her battle with terminal cancer. Nick’s resilience and Clare’s courage were an inspiration to his teammates and fans alike. The Tornado made it as far as the Division Finals of the post season tournament before bowing out to the Amarillo Bulls. Blase added 1G – 1A in six playoff games.
This past season, Blase played in 53 games with 3G – 3A to go along with 152 PIMs, including a goal against Wichita Falls in his final game in a Brahma’s sweater. He was looked to as a leader both on the ice and in the room. Nick often set the tone of the game with his physical play in the corners.
The UW – River Falls Falcons won the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference regular season crown in 2014 with an 8 – 4 – 0 conference mark. They were 15 – 9 – 3 overall. There is a very strong NAHL presence in River Falls with the Falcons rostering 21 former NAHL players this season with all but three eligible to return next season.
Blase will have an opportunity to meet up with former Tornado teammate Jason Eddy (UW – Eau Claire) during next season. In fact there were 94 NAHL alumni in the five team conference this season.
