With Aaron Donald and Anthony Barr likely coming off the clock before their selection, the Dallas Cowboys could very well go in the direction of upgrading the defensive tackle position. Showing the ability to play the 1-technique position or the 3-technique position, Florida State’s Timmy Jernigan has been rumored to the Cowboys for many months. Jernigan played on one of the best defenses in college football and he shows the ability to be an impact player for an NFL team for many years.
The bad news for Jernigan is that he will likely fall into the second round because it was reported Monday afternoon that he tested positive for drug use at the NFL Combine. Jason Garrett has a draft theory and that is drafting the “right kinda guy”, also known as RKGs. At 6’2″, 300 pounds, and getting off the ball quick, Jernigan passes the eye test when watching tape on him. The problem is that the Cowboys will most likely stay away from the former Seminole because of his failed drug test.
When you take a look at the Cowboys defensive line for 2014, it is easy to see why so many people have mocked Dallas drafting a defensive linemen in the first round. As I said earlier, Donald and Barr will probably be taken before Dallas is on the clock. Many have also mocked Kony Ealy to the Cowboys at No. 16, but there is reason to belief that he could end up being a bust in the NFL. With Jernigan out of the picture, don’t be surprised to see the Cowboys draft an offensive linemen like Zack Martin or Taylor Lewan. It will surely be an interesting night on Thursday for the Cowboys.
