Mike Mayock’s Mock Draft: Worst Mock to Date

I wasn’t mad, I was just disappointed. After waiting all offseason for NFL Draft Guru, Mike Mayock, to release his official mock draft, we get…this pile of #%$. It seems he was more concerned about headlines than reality.

The picks throughout his mock draft are often unqualified and seem to come out of left field. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t qualify all of my picks and rarely reveal any possible sources, but I’m pretty sure more is expected of Mike Mayock, than of little old me. Mayock should be citing specific sources and reasons as to why the teams are doing what they’re doing. Instead he just throws out possibilities that snag headlines.

Mocking the draft is hard. It’s impossible to get is even remotely correct. What seems obvious at this moment, is far from reality once the draft concludes. I’ve been told my picks are dumb too. It comes with the territory. In fact, some people think because I made a particular pick, it’s because I like and want the player on my team. That’s not how it works. If so, I’d have Jadeveon Clowney falling to Dallas at #16 every time.

Mocking the draft is about letting people into your thought process. It’s all about the “why”. Everyone knows all the mock drafts will be horribly incorrect. It’s about learning what teams are looking for and what the rumors are saying. With all of his contacts in the NFL Mayock should have plenty of that. But he didn’t share a thing.

In the end it’s nothing more than headline-grabbing wild speculation, but I guess that’s what all of these mock drafts are. The difference between a good one and a bad one are if you learn something – not if you like it. I would love for Aaron Donald to fall like Mike said he would. He’s my top pick for the Cowboys. But why would he fall? I didn’t learn that in Mayock’s Mock. I’m calling his the Dumbest to Date because it included wilder-than-normal speculation without many explanations as to why. I’ve always liked Mike but feel he may be targeting the Dallas Cowboys fanbase in order to get people talking about him and his Mock.

If Donald falls past the Cowboys and the Cowboys pick Johnny Manziel – I admit I’ll feel a little foolish. But I’m still not wrong in my desire to know “why” he projects it the way that he does. Knowledge is what we are all searching for. That’s why we read about the Cowboys every day of the year.

I felt pretty confident writing, Johnny Manziel to Dallas Cowboys: Not Gonna Happen, earlier today. I just can’t see how it’s possible or in the best interests of the Cowboys’ decision makers. But if Mike Mayock has some good intel telling him otherwise, I’d like to hear it.

In the end it’s just another mock draft with some unqualified guesses. Tonight the real thing happens. We get to see who’s wrong and who’s wrong-er. Christmas in the offseason is tonight!

I will say this abut Mayock. He has been one of the most on the money draft predictors and talent evaluators I have seen in comparison to the other guys. I see what he is saying about Manziel to Dallas. He said many times he would not pick Manziel but he thought JJ would. Its hard to argue that logic. The thing with Donald is people think he is a very scheme specific DT. Ask yourself how many teams run the Tampa 2. As for Dallas he also made a great point. JG and the rest of his staff could be gone next year and the Tampa 2 with it. There could be a good chance a new coach comes in and does not run the Tampa 2. Now you have to play Donald out of his scheme and he could be nowhere near as effective. I thought they were all good points. I think Donald may very well go to the Vikes or Bucs but if he does not, it is not unrealistic he falls.
