The Lone Star Brahmas began their quest to return the franchise to the post season play when they opened their 2014 NAHL Pre-Draft Camp at the Arctic Ice Arena on Friday afternoon. The invite only camp will conclude with an All-Star game on Sunday morning.
Brahmas Head Coach Dan Wildfong was joined by Assistant Coach Jeff Potter and new Brahmas NA3HL Head Coach Al Rooney. The trio will be spending the weekend evaluating roughly 70 players divided into four teams. Each team played a single game Friday evening and will return for two games each on Saturday, giving the coaching staff ample opportunity to make their selections for Sunday’s All-Star game.
If the group of hopefuls in camp are an indication of what Brahmas fans can expect in the coming season, then they should be in for some good physical play when the season gets underway. The big bodies, especially on defense, should fit well with Coach Wildfong’s focus on winning puck battles in the corners. There were also several forwards who showed no trepidation about going to the front of the net to do the dirty work.
How many of the players present are drafted and or make it to main camp in July remains to be seen, but it was definitely a right step in the process of moving the franchise into the upper echelons of theSouth Division and the NAHL.
