The MLB First Year Player Draft begins tonight and the Texas Rangers hope to add onto their already-deep farm system. The Rangers pick 30th overall, courtesy of Nelson Cruz’s departure to Baltimore. While Cruz’s 20 HRs this season would be preferred, gaining a draft pick will have to satisfy Rangers fans.

When the Rangers signed Shin-Soo Choo in the offseason they forfeited their original first round selection. Team officials still feel good about where they’re picking and who’s available. As reported by the Star Telegram, Director of Amateur Scouting Kip Fagg had this to say,

I think we’re going to be put in a good position to make a very good selection.

Picking the best player available seems to be the company line so far but who’s to say what happens between now and when the Rangers “go on the clock” tonight.

The draft runs 40 rounds over a 3 day period. Day one will be televised on MLB Network but to catch the rest of the picks check out MLB.com
