Dallas Mavericks Mailbag: Mavs Wasting Time with Melo

Dallas Mavericks Mailbag: Mavs are Wasting Their Time with Melo?

“The Mavericks are wasting their time! Melo won’t sign here,” said Jose. “He’s going to go to someone with younger superstars so he can do what LeBron did and build a superteam! Just watch, he will sign with the Bulls, Rockets, or Lakers and the Mavs will have to hurry and sign whoever is left over.”

Odds are you are right, Jose. I think Carmelo would be a great fit on the Bulls, a marketable player in Lakerland, and a beast in Houston. I still think he follows the money to New York when all is said and done, but that’s not really the point you’re trying to make, is it?

The point I believe you’re making is the Mavs are probably wasting their time trying to sign him in the first place. But if your team has a 30% chance to snag a superstar, isn’t it worth it? What about a 10% chance? I’m not personally a fan of Melo but I would place free agency on hold if I had even a 5% of getting someone who I considered a “superstar”.

Look at it this way too – EVERYONE is on hold until Melo and LeBron decide. Teams love players like Parsons, Ariza, and Deng but you don’t see them coming to terms with all of these guys, do you? So the Mavs aren’t really missing out on anyone by patiently waiting for Melo to decide. You can bet it’s going to be a mad dash for everyone else once Melo decides, but for now, everyone waits.

Feel comforted in the fact that the Mavericks have reached out to many other players (or agents) this first week. In fact, the Mavs were the first team to contact Luol Deng’s camp when free agency began. The Mavs are playing this right. They are swinging for the fences but they are working the phones in the background.

Thanks for the email, Jose!
