When the Dallas Cowboys selected Zach Martin with the 16th overall pick in this years Draft, they certainly had Tony Romo‘s protection in mind. Over the past several years this team has taken an old unit and turned in to one of the youngest, and most promising units in the entire League. This unit is now a strength, if not the strength of this team. Another way to look at the Martin pick is to bolster the run-game. DeMarco Murray is a really, really good running back. He just needs to stay healthy and when healthy he must be given more rushing attempts. Pure and simple, it has to happen.
I fully believe that this team is going to run the ball, it has no other choice. Not doing so has cost them games in the past, and the best way to protect this Defense is to keep them off of the field. Jason Garrett is at the end of his rope, he must look at his teams past in order to change its future. There were at least 2 games last Season where abandoning the run cost them the game. Two games get them the division. They must learn from these dumb mistakes, they are going to have to control the clock to give Tony Romo and this questionable Defense a shot.
DeMarco Murray is capable of a 1500 yard Season, even last year when he missed 3 games he could have achieved those numbers. There were just too many yards left on the field. If they had simply decided to hand the ball off on every play in the second half of the Green Bay game, they win. Without question.
As for the future, which by all accounts for these Coaches and most of the Players, is this upcoming Season, they will run the ball more. The O-Line is the unit with the most depth and talent, plus they are young. They will have back-ups capable of starting, and they will have versatility as well.
If you ask me what this Offense is going to look like this year, I would say a run-heavy scheme with the return of the long ball. Those useless 5 yard outs that Witten paid his bills with last year are going to be scrapped in favour of the run. The Cowboys will use the run to set up the pass, instead of the other way around. Personally, I cant wait to see it
