3 Free Agents Who Could Help the Cowboys in 2014

The 2014 NFL year officially started on March 11th.  Free agents were snapped up at breakneck speed.  The Cowboys didn’t exactly get into many bidding wars for big names.  They instead focused on finding bargains.  Enter early July.  Dallas has around 8 million dollars worth of wiggle room under the salary cap and there are still some free agents who can make an impact and help this squad reach the playoffs!

James Harrison OLB

The age IS a concern for the former Bengal and Steeler. He’s 36 but the experience and attitude would outweigh the risk.  We don’t have many leaders left on defense.  Sean Lee is injured, Hatcher and Ware are gone.  I propose James Harrison to help fill the vacancy.  Harrison would bring a bit of attitude to the defense as well.  He can’t be counted on as a 16 game starter anymore but considering the recent injury woes for Dallas, who can?  By all accounts Harrison is a solid citizen and would be an asset on this team playing part time.  He would likely sign for the minimum salary and I see that as a bargain, even for a grizzled vet.

I’d like to see someone like Harrison’s attitude on the defense, but someone with some longevity though.

          True!

  • Earl Robertson

All these guys you listed only two we could use. The safety and Harrison. Only Harrison because like u said would like what he would do for the other players as far as leadership

A little attitude would only help. Possibly show bruce carter how to be an effective olb too

I think Dallas is holding pat on free agency at the moment until teams make hard cuts as the rosters thin down in camp. Every year there are a handful of still capable vets who get cut because of salary. The rookie a team brought in to challenge for the spot showed enough talent/promise to warrant letting the more expensive vet go even if they were neck in neck in camp production.

There will be new guys available to consider when this process gets going…happens every year. Over the last few years we have even made these kind of tough cuts in camp where guys were scooped up and produced elsewhere. Just as Holmes showed us up in Oakland last year, Also, the salary demands of the vets already on the street today will certainly decrease as Week 1 grows very near and no team still has scooped them up.
