The Dallas Cowboys have a few options at Middle Linebacker. They drafted Anthony Hitchens, the have Justin Durant, plus they traded for Rolando McClain. I think that first and foremost, Rolando McClain should be given every opportunity to show what he can do, but if he does not get the job, I am rooting for DeVonte Holloman. Let’s face it Justin Durant is older and in my opinion, not a starter anywhere on this unit, but especially at the Mike. Durant has never been a playmaker, he is not going to start now.
In his two starts at the end of last year, Holloman showed some play-making ability. He has speed and he showed that he has good instincts as well. To me he is the perfect fit to man the middle. Durant even admitted after OTA’s that the middle is not his preference. That’s all well and good but realistically he isn’t that good at his natural Sam position. He is a bridge and that is it. I believe that if Sean Lee doesn’t get hurt that he doesn’t even make the team.
Training Camp will sort all of this out but my fear is that, in a lot of cases this organization has been afraid to go young. In my opinion they should give most of the reps to McClain and Holloman, while Hitchens gets comfortable. This team has an opportunity to coach these young guys up and actually have a good unit. Justin Durant is not going to get coached-up, at this point in his career, he is what he is. I have no desire to see him on the field.
People will make thee argument that a veteran like Durant is likely to make fewer mistakes. Who cares? I don’t want to see a safe defense, I want to see aggressive and hungry. DeVonte Holloman showed me and everybody else that he wants to play and that he is capable of doing so. Lets hope he gets a real opportunity to do so.
