Seen by many as the top 2-way SF on the market, Deng would immediately upgrade the Mavs in a way Parsons probably could not. Parsons, at age 25, still has the scoring ability and potential, but Deng offers an immediate presence on defense.
Deng’s numbers took a dip after being traded to Cleveland but most consider that more of a Cleveland thing, than a Deng thing. At age 29 he’s still a very strong player able to make an impact on a high caliber team for the next few years.
Offensively Luol Deng will fit in much like Shawn Marion. He doesn’t require specific plays run for him in order for him to can score. Instead he finds his opportunities.
The Mavericks cannot control what happens to Parsons anymore. The ball is in Houston’s court. The Mavs are now reaching out to Deng (and presumably Trevor Ariza) once more, to re-state their interest. Deng will be looking for $11-$12M per year and has enough suitors to make it happen.
Atlanta appears the frontrunners to sign Deng thus far. They have cleared the cap room and brought in friends and former Bulls teammates, Thabo Sefolosha and Kyle Korver. Houston and Dallas remain in the hunt but must resolve the Chandler Parsons offer first.
The Mavericks are in dangerous territory right now as they stand to miss out on all of their free agent targets if things fall the wrong way.
Completely Unscientifically Estimated Chance of Being a Maverick: 40%
