After one week of Pre-Season football one thing is clear, there is going to be a ton of flags this year. I am not sure what the League officials are thinking here. In an attempt to bring more scoring to the game, they are actually ruining the game.
Illegal Contact and Defensive Holding are being called all the time. Its stupid and quite frankly they are making Defensive Football obsolete. They might as-well take a Defender away while they’re at it.
In my opinion, good Defense is just as fun to watch as good Offense. The deck is un-fairly stacked against the defense and really, it is not fun to watch. They are walking a fine line and if they are not careful they could hurt viewership. Nobody wants to watch a penalty-fest and the reality is that what we are going to see this Season. Quite Literally, these DB’s are not being allowed to touch the Receivers. I mean at all. It’s kind of a joke.
Maybe I am out of touch on this one but I really liked old-school football.
This is not just a Pre-Season observation but rather a trend that I have noticed over the past few Seasons. Teams are modeling their Offenses after the Patriots dink-and-dunk style of Offense. There are very few teams that do the long-ball well anymore. Although the Patriots have had success, I am a firm believer that if they played in any other Division in football they would probably struggle make the Playoffs. I also think that Tom Brady is one of the most over-rated players in the history of the game.
The Cowboys are hell-bent on being a two-Tight End team like the Patriots. This to me is dumb. Dallas is at it’s best in the three WR set, they have been for years. The point here is, what works for one team does not necessarily work for another. The Cowboys should know better and I am shocked that they continue to use high Draft Picks to achieve this goal of being a two-Tight End team. Although, I think the Gavin Escobar pick was made because Jason Witten is getting old.
Last year, the Cowboys really took the dink-and-dunk to a brutal level. The Offense was as hard to watch at times as the Defense was. This, along with discipline to the run are the two areas that must be corrected. Tony Romo throws the deep ball as well as anyone. The Cowboys have to bring it back and I believe that Scott Linehan will do so.
