What an offseason and training camp so far!
The Dallas Cowboys received yet another hook to it’s proverbial belly this week in the form of a suspension for Orlando Scandrick, arguably the teams most consistent corner. This came just after the news of yet another Morris Claiborne injury (shoulder this time) that could cause him to miss time AND who may or may not be on thin ice already. Not to mention rookie defensive lineman Ben Gardner will be placed on IR this week.
Anthony Spencer still has yet to suit up this season, Sean Lee is out for the year, rookie Demarcus Lawrence will miss at least the first two regular season games and upwards of 15 other players have missed practice time to injury during this training camp including safety Matt Johnson and another defensive lineman, Tyrone Crawford.
The defense was numerically the league’s worst last season and improvement will next to impossible if these injuries continue. Time away from practice slows continuity and playbook assimilation. If Dallas has any chance of being a factor in the NFL this year, the defense must get healthy, get on the field, and get acclimated to each other in order to achieve some level of consistency.
Bad luck for some players only means a chance for his backup. Such is the way of the NFL. Next man up is truly a way of life in the ever fragile and constantly fluid sport.
Here are the 3 Cowboys on defense with golden opportunities over the next few weeks to earn playing time and/or steal jobs. These guys absolutely have the most to gain with the injury woes.
