It recently became public knowledge that the Texas Rangers placed Adrian Bletre, Yu Darvish, Alex Rios, Elvis Andrus and Shin-Soo Choo on waivers. It’s common for MLB teams to place most of there active roster on waivers however it’s uncommon that the big name players don’t get claimed. Last year, with the nearing of the Nelly Cruz suspension, the Rangers where able to pick up Alex Rios through the waiver wire.
It should be no surprise that teams didn’t put a claim in for Yu Darvish, who would require a huge return, and Elvis Andrus, high salary. The fact that no team put in a claim for Adrian Beltre might be the most confusing thing however. He has been top 3rd baseman in baseball for the last several years. He has continued to destroy the ball and would undoubtebly help any team.
This year the Rangers claimed veteran utility man Mike Carp. Carp isn’t going to come in and blow you away with his power but he can come in and prove that he can contribute in different ways. With injuries to both Mitch Moreland and Prince Fielder the Rangers were without a true first baseman on their MLB roster. Most people believe that Texas won’t retain Moreland which gives Carp the possibility of making it onto the 2015 roster. So far he hasn’t helped his case by hitting .143 in 13 games with the Texas Rangers.
With Texas being the worst team in baseball it’s very possible that they pick up another player or 2. Will any player they claim come in and make an impact or will a September call-up come in and show what he can offer? This team will be better in 2015 with all the injured players returning but can they find someone in last month that can contribute also?
