There was a time in his career when Raymond Felton was a solid option at the point guard position. At age 30, Felton has seen his better days. Not only is he a defensive liability, but Felton doesn’t generate his own shot that well and he is inefficient to say the least beyond the arc. Felton was probably a salary cap filler in the trade, but he will likely be pencilled in as the starter come opening day.
Trading away Jose Calderon and Shane Larkin was extremely difficult, but it was worth it because the Mavs were able to bring back Tyson Chandler to pair with Dirk Nowitzki. Rick Carlisle has a nice starting lineup going for him right now, but there is still a huge question mark at the point guard position.
Instead of letting Felton start for the Mavericks, the guy the Mavericks should think of starting is already on this roster. Gal Mekel is a player the Mavericks signed last offseason. Although Mekel is inexperienced to say the least, the Mavericks have a starting five filled with veterans and it wouldn’t hurt this team at all if they let a youngster like Mekel start.Per 36 minutes, Mekel would score nine points and eight assists per game. Those numbers are not spectacular, but they prove that Mekel does a good job at facilitating the offense. Mekel would do a great job at running the offense for the Mavs. Felton is no longer a starting-level player and the Mavs need to let younger players develop. Giving Mekel the chance to start would be a smart idea.
