Now that the Dallas Cowboys have made some moves in Free Agency, it is time to update the mock draft for a version 2.0. I am going to explain now that some of the moves may seem odd at first, but I will explain why I have chosen each person. I used Fanspeak’s On the Clock draft site to make my picks so that I would know who might and might not be available. I went through and used Drafttek’s rankings twice, Fanspeak twice, and Optimum Scouting once. I took the players most selected as well as based on needs and how I think the Cowboys will draft. So enjoy and let’s talk about it at the bottom.

Round 1 – Michael Bennett – DT – Ohio St. – It was between Bennett and either Eli Goldman and Melvin Gordon. I went with Bennett because while I agree the loss of DeMarco Murray is huge this is a deep draft at RB and Goldman isn’t that good of a pass rusher. I went with the more disruptive person on defense. I could see a CB going here, but I think Bennett is too good to pass up here.

Round 2 – Jay Ajayi – RB – Boise St. – I do not like the fact he has some fumble issues and was used a ton last year, but I think he might be the most complete overall back in the draft. Here I could have gone with either Byron Jones CB out of UCONN or Benardrick McKinney the ILB out of Miss St. I think using Ajayi in a rotation with the other guys on the roster would only help him for a year or two while they work out the small kinks in his game.

Round 3 – Quinten Rollins – CB – Miami (OH) – Rollins is an interesting case. He has all the physical tools and height you would love, but let’s be honest, basketball is his first love. What is great about him is he is extremely physical as a CB, helps in the run, and is a complete ball hawk. His issues are he is too footwork heavy and can jump routes which causes him to get lost on double moves. He could be a really good slot CB which would allow Orlando Scandrick to move outside. The other choices were WRs, and I think it is too early for the Cowboys to look at WRs.

Round 4 – Tre McBride – WR – William & Mary – This was a hard round to pick in. Phillip Dorsett had just come off the board in each draft I did and there was not much that wasn’t a huge reach. There were no OLB or ILB within reach and really WRs and TEs were stacked up with higher grades than here in the 4th. McBride offers about a 4.4 speed (even though it doesn’t show on game tape) and kick return abilities. He has a HUGE catch radius and extremely good hands.

Round 5 – Robert Myers – G – Tenn St. – The only reason I thin he will be here in the 5th round is where he played college football. He is actually a really good guard in pass protection already and with some added weight and a little work could be a steal in the 5th. At the very least he could be really good depth for a year or 2 without much dropoff from starter to backup. There were a few CBs and TEs on the board, but I went with more of a need.

Round 7 – Corey Grant – RB – Auburn – I really almost went with either a CB or DL here, but the speed of Grant this late in the draft was too good to pass up. He runs a sub 4.3 40. Yes that is sub 4.3. He has amazing straight-line speed and could be used as a really good returner if he isn’t in the mix for RB right off the bat. I think if he is there, someone like Dallas would take the chance on him.

Round 7 – Ryan Russell – DE – Purdue – Russell is frustrating. He looks the part but doesn’t play like it. He has a great first step so the ability might be there. With work, I think that he could be at least a rotational player. There is not much left in the draft, but I went with a position that depth was needed at this point.

I don’t think the Cowboys will look for a QB in the draft since this is a very weak class this season. I also believe that unless a TE won’t happen unless the best one falls below the 2nd round. I would like to see a safety picked up, however in the mocks I went through there were none available that wasn’t a huge stretch. It would not surprise me if the Cowboys wait until the 3rd or 4th for a RB and go defense in the first 2 rounds.

So there it is. There will have to be a v3.0 once free agency is over and more answers to the needs are met or not met. Let me know below what you think of the picks and if you would have gone a different direction.
