The 2023 NFL draft is behind the Dallas Cowboys. Much work remains between now and the end of training camp.
I prefer not to get ahead of myself. I consider roster projection to be important, but I also view it as a fun activity before the real work begins. Figuring out how things could unfold for the Dallas Cowboys seemed intriguing to me.
The pads still need to be put on. Once the pads are worn. We will discover who the final 53 contenders are. Although injury can be a factor, I will consider all things being equal.
This is being created just for fun. That’s why it’s titled “Way-too-early 2023 Dallas Cowboys 53-man roster projection.”
DALLAS COWBOYS OFFENSE
Dallas Cowboys Quarterbacks (2)
Dak Prescott, Cooper Rush
Dak Prescott is the starting quarterback for the Dallas Cowboys. This is not up for debate. Cooper Rush will serve as his backup.
Last year, I mentioned that Will Grier is a more talented QB than Cooper Rush, and I still stand by that.
Dallas shouldn’t even think about getting rid of a player who has a 5-1 record for them in the last two years. The season was saved by Cooper Rush last year.
To fill the need for more players in other positions. Dallas won’t have a third quarterback on their 53-man roster.
Dallas Cowboys Running backs (3)
Tony Pollard, Deuce Vaughn (R), Hunter Luepke (UDFA)
Tony Pollard is the undisputed primary running back. The role of the change of pace running back will be filled by Deuce Vaughn.
Hunter Luepke’s versatility as an H-back makes him valuable to special teams, and he can serve as a power back too.
Malik Davis is the Dark Horse. Provided he can improve upon his 2022 season and demonstrate abilities beyond running the football.

Dallas Cowboys Wide receivers (5)
CeeDee Lamb, Brandin Cooks, Michael Gallup, Jalen Tolbert, Jalen Moreno-Crooper (UDFA)
When you take a look at the depth chart, it becomes apparent that CeeDee Lamb, Brandin Cooks, and Michael Gallup are the top three wide receivers and it’s difficult to dispute that fact. Based on his exceptional talent, it is highly recommended that Jalen Tolbert should not be cut in his second year.
Assuming that Jalen Moreno-Crooper can replicate the same level of performance that I have witnessed on his tape, there is a possibility that he might prove to be too valuable to let go after the training camp/preseason.
West Florida WR David Durden is a dark horse. It is crucial for Jalen Moreno-Crooper to seize his opportunities. David Durden has the potential. Although it’s a big leap from West Florida to the NFL, I really like his tape.
Dallas Cowboys Tight ends (3)
Luke Schoonmaker (R), Jake Ferguson, Peyton Hendershot
The Dallas Cowboys do not require the addition of a veteran to this group. Looking ahead to 2023, it is clear that this young and gifted trio will continue to grow and develop, making them even more capable of causing damage.
Based on my observations, I have high expectations that all three members will make valuable contributions towards the team’s offensive strategy.

Dallas Cowboys Tackles (4)
Tyler Smith, Terence Steele, Matt Waletzko, Tyron Smith.
Terence Steele will be starting on the right side while Tyler Smith takes the position of starting left tackle. Tyler Smith can flex to left guard if no one is found to man the position.
My confidence in Tyron Smith playing a full season is low. Tyler Smith and Terrence Steele should be the Cowboys’ starting tackles going forward. The two of them have demonstrated that they are the superior choices for the tackle position.
According to Mike McCarthy, Waletzko is excelling in rehab since his shoulder surgery. He was sidelined for the remainder of the season after an injury in October.
Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy said OT Matt Waletzko is “knocking it out of the park” following his shoulder surgery. Josh Ball to work more at guard in future after beginning NFL career at tackle. “To me, they’re right on schedule.” pic.twitter.com/aB5pdSZUS9

Dallas Cowboys Guards (4)
Zack Martin, Chuma Edoga, Asim Richards (R), T.J Bass (UDFA)
The role of starting right guard is fulfilled by Zack Martin. With his ability to play both G and OT, Chuma Edoga is a versatile player who can provide depth at either position. Asim Richards has the potential to start in the future.
T.J Bass is a sleeper. Bass is a versatile offensive lineman who has played various positions for the Ducks. As a three-year starter, he spent most of his career at left tackle but also played left guard.
Dallas Cowboys Centers (2)
Tyler Biadasz, Matt Farniok
Tyler Biadasz is the clear-cut starting center, and Matt Farniok’s ability to play guard or center makes him the ideal backup option.
Center position has a sleeper in Alec Lindstrom. He was signed to a reserve/futures contract by the Cowboys in January. The former Boston College standout performed well in a competitive group of rookie interior linemen. After one year, we’ll find out if he’s improved from year 1 to year 2.

DALLAS COWBOYS DEFENSE
Dallas Cowboys Defensive ends (6)
Micah Parsons, DeMarcus Lawrence, Dorance Armstrong, Sam Williams, Viliami Fehoko Jr. (R), Tyrus Wheat (UDFA).
The Dallas Cowboys may decide to prioritize to go long at the defensive end position. The starters are DeMarcus Lawrence and Micah Parsons.
The team’s depth will be enhanced with the addition of Dorance Armstrong, Sam Williams, and Tyrus Wheat, who are all quality players.
Due to his ability to adapt to different schemes, Viliami Fehoko will be taking over the DE position that was previously held by Chauncey Golston. Tyrus Wheat will take Dante Fowler Jr’s spot on the roster.
In my opinion, there is a valid argument to be made for implementing a youth movement at the defensive end position.
Tyrus Wheat is a 260 lb power rusher, that somehow runs a 4.6, BUT is more of a linebacker than an edge guy, BUT can drop back in coverage. MSU uses him like i want Dan to use Parsons, peep these plays and see how many spots he lines up. #Cowboys likely value the versatility pic.twitter.com/xHMzZs2osm

Dallas Cowboys Defensive Tackles (4)
Mazi Smith (R), Jonathan Hankins, Osa Odighizuwa, Chauncey Golston,
A rotation at the one-tech position in the Cowboys defensive front will be anchored by Mazi Smith and Johnathan Hankins, while Osa Odighizuwa has been named as the starter at the three-tech position.
The late season emergence of NT Johnathan Hankins and DT Chauncey Golston led to Neville Gallimore and Quinton Bohanna being inactive.
It’s unlikely that Neville Gallimore and Quinton Bohanna will make the roster this year.
Unless there is an major injury, I am certain that this group will be formidable group of bullies.

Dallas Cowboys Linebackers (5)
Leighton Vander Esch, Damone Clark, DeMarvion Overshown (R), Jabril Cox, Durrell Johnson (UDFA).
The starters will be Leighton Vander Esch and Damone Clark. Jabril Cox will provide nickel coverage.
This unit benefits from the youth, athleticism, and versatility of DeMarvion Overshown and Durrell Johnson.
The Dark Horse is Isaiah Land. It seems unlikely that Dallas will feel the need to bring on a veteran. I’ve already been through that. I can see the Cowboys going with six at this spot.
The benefits weren’t worth the effort. Tyrus Wheat offers position flexibility.
Dallas Cowboys Cornerbacks (6)
Trevon Diggs, Stephon Gilmore, DaRon Bland, Jourdan Lewis, Myles Brooks (UDFA), Israel Mukumamu
Trevon Diggs and Stephon Gilmore have been designated as the boundary cornerbacks for the team. DaRon Bland’s ability to perform effectively in both the slot and outside positions highlights his versatility on the field. They are Cowboys’ top three cornerbacks on the roster.
Jourdan Lewis adds veteran depth/insurance to the team. Myles Brooks is ready for the NFL. Incredible versatility is provided by Israel Mukumamu.
Eric Scott is The Dark Horse. Despite being inexperienced, I won’t limit any young player’s potential. It’s my opinion that Kelvin Joseph’s time in Dallas is up.
Dallas Cowboys Safeties (4)
Jayron Kearse, Malik Hooker, Donovan Wilson, Markquese Bell
The Dallas Cowboys secondary is once again headed by King Ghidorah. Jayron Kearse, Donovan Wilson, Malik Hooker will be the starters again.
Dallas isn’t likely to let go of Markquese Bell. Due to his high potential, it was too risky to expose him to the waiver wire.

Dallas Cowboys Special Teams (5)

C.J. Goodwin – Special Teams Ace
Bryan Anger – Punter
Trent Sieg – Long Snapper
Kicker – TBD
