The Dallas Cowboys, largely inactive this offseason, have surprisingly been ranked as a Super Bowl contender my many. This is the mystery of the Dallas Cowboys

After the 2016 NFL Draft, the Dallas Cowboys received every grade in the book. The reasoning can be followed for any of the grades, and to be honest, it is difficult to judge the draft just based on the picks alone.

No one knows how any of the young men will turn out. But, to say the Cowboys haven’t gotten any better is a little short sighted, albeit, a good argument.

With the Dallas Cowboys, the one thing many people point to is the lack of pass rush and creating turnovers. This is a serious issue with the Cowboys, however Rod Marinelli is not one of those defensive coaches who relies on that one guy to create a pass rush, he loves to send waves of fresh players.

That is exactly how the Dallas Cowboys are built.

Sure, Demarcus Lawrence and Randy Gregory look like they will be suspended for the first few games of the season, but the Cowboys seem fairly confident that Charles Tapper, Tyrone Crawford, Jack Crawford, David Irving, Benson Mayowa, Cedric Thornton, and crew can create enough pass rush to amaze people.

Even Marinelli believes this to be true.

The secondary got a touch better with Orlando Scandrick returning and having the ability to move Byron Jones to safety. This should relieve some of the issues on the outside, and if anything strengthen the coverage on the slot and out of the backfield.

This coverage also includes the linebacker corps, which to be honest could be spectacular by the end of the season if Jaylon Smith actually can play this season. Not the best defense, but a much faster, defense.

Where the Cowboys could really surprise everyone is on offense. A lot of people seemed to scratch their head at picking up Ezekiel Elliot, but the move made a ton of sense. Elliot has the ability to be a three down back.

When your starting running back from last season is hitting 30, has a history of injuries, and the players behind him either have injury issues or have seen their stats decrease year over year, it might be smart to grab that guy who can carry the team at the end of the game. Or ever, god forbid, Tony Romo goes down again.

Sure, there is an argument about the lack of getting a quarterback higher in the draft, however, the Cowboys seem to be okay with Kellen Moore for now as the backup until Dak Prescott proves his worth. A healthy wide receiver corps, a deep running back corps, and some new weapons on the team, could all help any quarterback, including Tony Romo.

The Cowboys are even looking at depth at tight end and possibly an improved kick return game. While, Jason Witten still has a few years left, the depth behind him is less than stellar. The offense if healthy could potentially be the best in the NFL. With the ability to score often and keep their defense rested, it should allow for a far better season than last year, even if Romo does go down again. The Cowboys built this team to handle it better than last season.

The Cowboys are a mystery, they could be one of the biggest offensive powerhouses in the league, if not the biggest. They could be a very serviceable defense, and could actually improve more than many think over last year. However, they could see some injuries that debilitate the team again and have to go another year with disappointment. They really could go either way.

What gives hope that it is for the better is instead of trying to find all around replacements late in the draft, they went for players who are really good at one or two things. Not a guy who is just okay at a lot of things. If they use the players right, the Dallas Cowboys could return to 2014 form. If not, it could be another 2015, all over again. But, right now it is looking more like 2014.
