As the Dallas Cowboys look to move on from long-time starting quarterback Tony Romo, much talk has centered around where he’d be happy and what he deserves. We discuss…

In this today’s Cowboys chat we sat down to talk all about the Dallas Cowboys. Headlining the discussion is the future of Tony Romo. Dak Prescott has unquestionably claimed the starting job, making Romo an impossible piece to carry into next season.

How much can the Cowboys save by cutting or trading Romo?

They’re going to save roughly $5M if they get rid of Romo. He’s set to cost $24,700,000 for the Cowboys this season and if they cut or trade him they will only be on the hook for $19,600,000. That’s a savings of roughly $5M which isn’t a ton since you still need to fill the back-up QB spot along with all the other offseason needs.

Aside from $19.6M, the Cowboys don’t owe Romo a darn thing.

Cutting ties with Romo this season is about saving money in 2018 more than it is about saving money in 2017.

Since Tony Romo wants to compete for a Super Bowl before his career ends, do you think he’ll end up in Houston or Denver?

I don’t care what Romo wants, I’m going to do what’s best for the team if I’m making the front office decisions. Look, aside from $19.6M, the Cowboys don’t owe Romo a darn thing. I’d be happy to grant him his wish if he voided his contract, but that’s not something he’d consider and frankly, not something the Players Union would allow.

The Dallas Cowboys owe it to their players, coaches, and fans to trade Tony Romo to the highest bidder. I really like Romo but this is a business here and letting Romo decide his fate is bad business.

Where do you see Tony Romo ending up?

I’ve said for the past few months that I think Romo will end up with the New York Jets. If a team lacks strong QB play and the GM is on the hotseat, they are a potential partner. They are in win-now mode and the decision-maker is desperate to save his job. I know the links to the Broncos and Texans make sense but in a bidding war I think someone like the Jets win.

How much can the Cowboys get for Romo?

It all depends on if multiple teams compete for him. In a bidding war the sky is the limit. If Sam Bradford could fetch a first rounder I imagine an old and injury-prone Romo could as well. My gut says the Cowboys will get a conditional draft pick linked to Romo’s health. A 1st rounder would probably need health guarantees attached.

I’m hoping for a solid player in return and then a conditional 2nd round pick in 2018. A conditional pick could be something like if Romo plays 75% of the snaps. So something small in 2017 and then the conditional pick of greater value in 2018.
