The Dallas Cowboys have lost several key players to free agency, but there are two players the Cowboys need to re-sign immediately.

When free agency started last week, some of the Dallas Cowboys own free agents signed with other teams quicker than a Texas tornado! Some players were expected to sign with other teams, but others were expected to to remain with the team.

As we all know, it didn’t happen as planned.  Sure, Dallas surprised everyone and were able to re-sign wide receiver Terrance Williams, who was expected to sign a bigger contract with another team. For reasons unknown, Dallas also re-signed wide out Brice Butler.

At the beginning of free agency, Dallas had 20 players set to become free agents. The Cowboys were hit hard with losses on the defensive side of the ball. The Cowboys lost Barry Church, J.J. Wilcox, Morris Claiborne, Jack Crawford, Terrell McClain, and Ryan Davis.

On the offensive side of the ball, Dallas lost guard Ronald Leary to the Denver Broncos, who signed a lucrative contract. Out of nowhere, tackle Doug Free retired.

With Dallas losing so many starters on both sides of the ball, this team needs to regroup, refocus, and re-sign cornerback Brandon Carr and running back Darren McFadden.

Brandon Carr

Although Dallas signed former Philadelphia Eagles corner Nolan Carroll to offset the departure of Claiborne, Dallas needs Carr’s services more than ever. Carr proved last year that he’s a decent corner, more than capable of handling opposing teams best receivers.

More from Dallas Cowboys

Not only does Carr brings experience to the defensive backfield, but he also brings durability. The guy never misses any games to injuries or sickness. Availability is the best ability, which makes Carr special.

If Dallas can’t re-sign Carr, their secondary will lack years of experience next season. Besides Carroll and slot corner Orlando Scandrick, this secondary will lack vital experience. Second year defensive back Anthony Brown is an up and coming player, but he’s still learning the ropes.

Scandrick is good, but he’s getting up in age and it showed at times last season. So when you take Scandrick’s age and health into consideration, Dallas really needs Carr. They need him badly.

And I haven’t even discussed how Dallas needs to address their safety position.

In reality, since Dallas didn’t want to spend meaningful money to upgrade the position, they need to go and sign Carr like yesterday. There is no need to sit back and play around and lose Carr, too.

Of course, I’m not expecting Dallas to overpay for Carr’s services by any means. However, Dallas can’t miss out on signing one of its own. If Dallas misses out on Carr, there are other free agent corners the Cowboys could target, like Brandon Flowers and Leon Hall to name a few.

I expect Dallas to use one of its picks to draft a corner, but unless it’s Deion Sanders, the rookie will be on the sidelines learning the ropes himself.

With Carr, the Cowboys know what they have, and Carr knows the system. Further, he has proven his worth.

Darren McFadden

The next player Dallas needs to re-sign is running back Darren McFadden. The veteran runner proved he’s a more than capable of carrying the load. But he’s another runner that can carry the rock, pick up good yardage, and give Ezekiel Elliott that much needed rest.

For a back approaching age 30, McFadden still has speed, can catch out of the backfield, and he has fresh legs, especially since Elliott gets the majority of the workload. McFadden is a good insurance policy in the event Elliott gets hurt.

Also, having McFadden gives Dallas three reliable running backs (with Alfred Morris), no need to shortchange yourself. After losing so many of its own players to free agency, it’s time for Dallas to re-sign these two players if it wants to give itself a chance to repeat last season’s success.

If not, the Cowboys can continue to count its compensatory draft picks for next season.
