Round 7f. Garrett Gilbert, Quarterback, SMU
Finally a developmental quarterback behind Tony Romo. Garrett Gilbert first committed to Texas, as he was a 5-star recruit in the country. After falling out of flavor in Austin, Gilbert elected to transfer to SMU. In only two seasons at SMU, Gilbert threw over 6,000 yards and 36 touchdowns. Gilbert has a strong arm and he has decent technique. In the seventh round, it wouldn’t hurt to bring in a local product like Gilbert. I would love to draft Johnny Manziel, but there are more pressing needs in Dallas. Gilbert has the tools to out-duel Kyle Orton, Brandon Weeden, and Caleb Hanie for the backup quarterback job.
