Lone Star Brahmas Can’t Keep Up With Speedy Jets

The Lone Star Brahmas came into the fourth and final game of the NAHL Showcase Tournament on a high note following their big come from behind win on Friday, but it was soon obvious that the ice was tilted in Janesvilles favor. From the drop of the puck, the Jets displayed some speed which the Brahmas had no answer for.

Drew Callin opened the scoring for the Jets at the 13:09 mark of the first just as the Brahmas had killed off a Jets power play. Cullen Munson fired a shot on goal that TJ Black kicked aside, but Callin was there to put back the rebound before Black could recover. Kyle Patava picked up the secondary assist.

Despite being out shot 22 – 8 through the first 39 plus minutes of the game, it looked as though the Brahmas would go into the second intermission down one. However, with just 19 ticks left on the clock Mitch Fossier accepted a pass from Brandon Schultz at the bottom of the right circle and put it in the back of the net.

Lone Star entered the third period with a little more aggression and looked to try to slow the Jets down by putting a body on them. They tried to mount a comeback starting with a Cody Wickline power play marker from Sebastian Vidmar at 7:51, but Janesville was having none of it.

Janesville killed off the second half of the double minor and then Evan Feno sent Fossier behind the net with the puck and he found Shultz on the backdoor. Shultz put one off the pillows and then followed his own rebound to kill any Brahmas momentum. Time of the goal was 14:38. Just over one minute later with the Jets on the power play, Shultz sent another puck on net off a Janesville faceoff win. Black got the glove on it but it bounced right to Adam Windborg just off the far post to close out the scoring.

Lone Star was out shot 33 – 13 in the game and both scored once on the power play. Janesville had seven opportunities to the Brahmas six. The loss left Lone Star 2 – 2 – 0 for the Showcase.

The Brahmas will be on the road next weekend for a single Saturday night game in Corpus Christi. The Icerays will be coming off an overtime loss to the Keystone Ice Miners and finished the tournament 2 – 1 – 1.

Elsewhere around the NAHL South Division

Odessa Jackalopes – Johnstown Tomahawks

The Jackalopes lost a back and forth affair 6 – 4 to the Tomahawks who were led by Joe Drabin’s 1G – 2A performance. Nobody else on the Johnstown roster had more than one point. Ryan Bednard picked up the win in net.

Wichita Falls Wildcats – Michigan Warriors

This game went scoreless until nearly the 45th minute of play. Kevin Charyszyn finally broke open the scoring with an unassisted goal and then closed out the 4 – 2 win with an empty netter as time was winding down. Austin Shaw made 30 saves in the win.

Corpus Christi Icerays – Keystone Ice Miners

After coming back from a two goal deficit to tie the game going into the second intermission, the Icerays needed a power play goal from Wes Michaud midway through the third to go to overtime. Following a scoreless five minute extra period the teams went to a shootout with Brendan Jaquay scoring for Keystone as the second shooter while Alex Blankenburg stopped all five Corpus Christi shooters for the win.

Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees – Soo Eagles

The Killer Bees suffered their second blowout loss of the tournament as the Eagles and Jack Berry took a 5 – 0 win. Berry turned aside all 20 shots he faced from Rio Grande and Trevor Cope scored twice to pace the offense.

Amarillo Bulls – Springfield Jr Blues

The Bulls used a Brady Tomlak power play goal with just 1:15 to go in the third to eek out a 3 – 2 win over Springfield. Jacob Weatherly was under fire in the contest facing 32 shots. Both Springfield goals came via the power play.

Minot Minotauros – Wenatchee Wild

Wenatchee gave back a two goal first period lead and ended up in a shootout with the Minot Minotauros to decide the contest. Christian Mohs scored twice for Minot in the game and Blake Lizotte had three points in regulation before scoring the deciding shootout goal in the seventh round. Atte Tolvanen was between the pipes for Minot making 23 saves through overtime and then stopping all but one in the shootout.
