Lone Star Brahmas Dig Deep In Big Come From Behind Win

The Wenatchee Wild made their first ever visit to the NYTEX Sports Centre on Friday to face the Lone Star Brahmas. From the opening faceoff it looked as though the Wild might hand the Brahmas their first loss on home ice of the season.

The Brahmas went down one early as August Van Ungem-Sternberg carried the puck into the zone then fed it to Andre Pison cutting down the middle for a one timer over Jake Kupsky’s left shoulder at 4:35. Wenatchee picked up another at 9:50 when Nick Ford bumped the puck off the near halfwall, but nobody was home for the Brahmas and Chris Jones stepped into it putting it stick side. The goal chased Kupsky from the net bringing TJ Black into the contest. The Wild lead went to three on a broken play in the high slot that ended up on Ryan Chaison’s tape and he fired it past Black’s right skate at 13:37 with assists to Brendan Harris and Tyler Rockwell.

Oskar Andren broke the ice for the Brahmas at 4:18 of the second after Sebastian Vidmar worked the puck off the near halfwall to Ludvig Larsson who found Andren alone in the slot and he blasted it past Michael Bullion. Vidmar broke through on a lone man rush at 7:43 and was pulled down from behind by Jones resulting in a penalty shot awarded to Vidmar. The league’s point leader took the puck wide left, slammed on the brakes as he cut across the goal mouth and tucked it past the left skate. Andren got his second of the night off another rebound on the faceoff following the media timeout. The draw was pulled back to Sean Giles at the point and his blast went off a skate to Vidmar low on the right wing. Vidmar fired it on net, and his rebound came out the far side for Andren’s backhander top shelf.

Wenatchee got one back when a shot from the near wall by Colin Burston appeared to go off of Hogan Davidson and into the net at 11:05. Dakota Raabe and Chiasson picked up the assists.

It took the Brahmas only 17 seconds to respond when Liam Stirtzinger gave the puck to Hayden Hansen for a shot on goal. Zach Quinn, who had replaced Bullion after the second Andren goal made the initial save, but Quinn Carroll dug it out and sent it into the twine. The lead swung to the Brahmas late in the period. Johan Steen corralled the puck and gave it to Larsson who hit Andren with a homerun pass and Andren did the rest driving the net and putting it five hole for the hat trick.

The Wild were the recipient of another fortunate bounce when Raabe shot the puck from the near point off of Steen’s stick in front then off the crossbar and in. Time of the goal was 11:44 of the third.

With just 17.3 seconds to go, Andren put the game away for Lone Star. Steen dislodged the puck from Raabe at the Brahmas’ blueline sending Vidmar the other way. Vidmar avoided a check by Donovan Ott as he crossed the blue line then hit Andren with a cross ice pass and he lifted it over Quinn for his fourth of the night and the game winner. With one second left Burston hit Anton Santesson up high behind Black’s cage sending Santesson awkwardly to the ice. The Brahmas’ defenseman had to be helped off the ice favoring his shoulder.

The Brahmas outshot the Wild 27 – 23 on the night and both teams were scoreless on the power play. The Brahmas were 0 – 1 while Wenatchee was 0 – 2.

Topeka – Wichita Falls

The Wildcats Jake Townsend scored early in the first to set the tone for the night. After going into the first intermission tied at one, Wichita Falls used a four goal second to take control of the contest. Colin Staub pulled the Wildcats even at 14:38 just 31 seconds after Topeka had taken the lead only to see the Roadrunners go back up 36 seconds later. That is when the Wildcats opened it up with Kevin Charyszn, Nick Farmer and Alex Falconer doing the damage. Jonathan Lazarus had two third period goals to ice it away for the 7 – 4 win. Austin Shaw made 27 saves to record the win.

Amarillo – Rio Grande

Daniel Nilsson scored twice in the first to stake the Killer Bees to an early lead. After a scoreless second Parker Wood and Andrew Scofield sandwiched goals around the Bulls only tally of the night making Nick Schmit a winner.

Odessa – Corpus Christi

It took the Icerays nearly 31 minutes to find the back of the net with a shorthanded goal by Connor Kelly. Ryan Cusin, Tanner Lomsnes and Griff Jeszka scored in the final stanza for a 4 – 2 win in front of Andrew Lindgren’s 30 saves.
