Ask almost any Dallas Cowboys fan and they will tell you the team needs a backup to Tony Romo. Sure the team went out and got Brandon Weeden, but watching him play left many to wonder if the Cowboys should go in another direction. I am not a fan of Brandon Weeden, I think his vision is average and he has a terrible touch on the ball. When he throws it is like everything has to be as hard as he can throw it. So where does that leave the Cowboys? With such a weak draft for QBs it doesn’t look likely they will find a solid backup in the draft this season.
First, let’s just say that with Johnny Manziel heading to rehab, it is a good thing they didn’t draft him just on that alone. There are a few free agents out there that might be had and could be a somewhat solid backup. Here is the list of a few.
1. Mark Sanchez – He played in a Chip Kelly offense and has at times shown he can be fine, other times he shows he has poor decision making. I am not sure how much is the system and how much is Mark, but as a backup he could be had.
2. Brian Hoyer – Sure another Brown, why not? He looks like he might be the best backup on the market. He has shown enough to justify making him a backup, but might want to play somewhere he can at least compete to be a starter.
3. Jake Locker – Jake has played for a mediocre Titans team, but isn’t a terrible pick for a backup. He has shown a flash here and there that could be built upon.
4. Matt Moore – What? This guy is till around? Yes he is. He started for the Dolphins in 2011 and actually didn’t do too bad. He had an 87.1 rating, 16 TDs, and 9 INTs. He knows the team and could be a really good pick as a backup.

Now like I said the draft is really weak this season there is not a lot to be had as of right now. That being said here are some people the Cowboys could target. (No I won’t put one of the top guys here)
1. Garrett Grayson – Colo St. – This shows the dropoff of this draft class as he is projected around the 3rd or 4th round…and he is the 3rd rated QB. He is a sleeper prospect and believe it or not only Mariota has a better completion percentage than him. If the Cowboys are going to draft one fairly early I would think he is the top of the list guy.
2. Shane Carden – East Carolina – He has a really decent arm and has shown to make good decisions in the pocket. He doesn’t really flash in one area, but still put up huge numbers. Any QB who can help put up 70 points in Div 1 in one game deserves a look.
3. Brandon Bridge – QB – South Alabama – I covered him a few weeks ago, and let me tell you this kid is a real sleeper. If he can work on not staring down receivers, which is fixable, he could be a really good QB. It all depends on if he can compete against better players, if he can, he is a good option.
I know there were others, I left Petty out because currently some scouts are scared that his accuracy is below average. They would like to see more from him leading up to the draft. I also left out some guy like Marshall who had arrests or off-field issues. There are others I could have added but I just worked down the board into mid rounds, late rounds, and UFAs and took one from each.
So what do you guys think the Cowboys should do at the backup QB spot? It is a tough call.
