Round 5: Northern Iowa DT Xavier Williams

In the 4-3 defensive scheme, having a big 1-technique defensive tackle is most certainly needed. So a few things on about the 1-technique defensive tackle position:

  • The 1-technique consistently takes on double teams.
  • The 1-technique comes off the field on passing situations. He will not be on the field when the Cowboys go with their nickel and dime packages.
  • Over the past ten years, the best 1-technique in football has been Vince Wilfork.

With all of this being said, the Cowboys have to make improvements at this position, as Nick Hayden has manned the position over the past two years and Cowboys fans will be extremely pleased if and when anyone else is playing this position. Considering that the 1-technique does not play every down, the Cowboys can address this position later in the draft and one player that makes sense is Xavier Williams. At 6-foot-2, 330 pounds, Williams has the size to take on double teams. He’s a tough guy to move as his height keeps him lower than most offensive linemen. With Williams, the Cowboys would have a guy that is a tough-worker in the interior and a guy that would excel against the running game.
