Round 1: Kevin Johnson, Cornerback, Wake Forest

It isn’t the popular pick, but the Cowboys need to address the cornerback position in this upcoming draft. After two straight seasons of horrible play from Brandon Carr, it should be said that he cannot be trusted upon for a starting cornerback. Morris Claiborne cannot be trusted upon either because of the complicated torn patellar injury he’s recovering from. Orlando Scandrick is getting better and better, but he needs a sidekick and that’s why the Cowboys need to upgrade this position early in the draft.

Picking Kevin Johnson in the first round might be a bit of a reach, but sitting where they are right now, the reality is that the Cowboys won’t have any first-round quality players on their board. Usually, NFL teams have 13-16 first-round grades on players. With the 27th pick, the Cowboys likely won’t get one of those players, but Johnson is a great consolation. He has elite cover/mirror skills. He has good fluidity, decent ball skills, and he still has a ton of room to grow. One thing I’d like to see him improve, however, is his ability against the run.
