Round 7b: Isaiah Johnson, Safety, Georgia Tech
Even though the Cowboys seem to be happy with their safeties in Barry Church and J.J. Wilcox, it never hurts to add competition. Isaiah Johnson is a bigger safety at 6-foot-2, 215 pounds, but he does have some speed to go with his size. An ACL injury put a small halt on his draft stock, but Johnson is still a player that has a ton of traits that the Cowboys would love him. For starters, he’s an academic standout and he’s also a sure tackler. Going back to the Cowboys losing Dwayne Harris’ gunning ability in special teams, Johnson is a guy that could come in and play that role if need be.
In the seventh round, it’s really a crapshoot of who to pick, but drafting a safety like Johnson would be ideal. The Cowboys are known in the past few years for drafting high-character guys. Fitting under that category is Johnson. Considering his potential, Johnson is a player that should be intriguing in the latter rounds.
