C Marc Gasol
We’d be remiss if we didn’t look at free agent Marc Gasol. Gasol is widely considered as the best center in the NBA right now. He’s playing at the top of his game, he’s young, strong, and athletic – what’s not to like?
Nothing really, but the top 2015 free agent is fully expected to stay with the Grizz this season and beyond.
C Larry Sanders
The highly-talented and highly-troubled 26 year old gave up on the game last season, but he may be looking to find his way back to the NBA this season. The 6’11” center from Fort Pierce, FL averaged 7.3 points, 6.1 rebounds, and 1.4 blocks per game. He earned a 15.25 PER in 27 games before walking away from the game and walking away from roughly $27M.
Larry Sanders has struggled with drug and psychological issues for quite a while, so a large level of risk is associated with anyone who signs him. A 1-year, “prove-it” contract is his most likely option back to the NBA. He’s a unique and truly interesting guy to listen to. Check out: Larry Sanders’ Story for a fantastic article and interview with Sanders. It’s clear, he’ll never be what we see as a “normal” NBA player, but he has a lot to prove, and the potential to get it done. Packaging him with a reliable veteran may be risk worth taking.
Chances of signing Marc Gasol: 1%
Chances of signing Larry Sanders: 5% (but intriguing nonetheless)
