FC Dallas Beat Revolution on 4th of July
By Curry Goff
I’m still not quite sure how I feel about FC Dallas beating a team called the New England Revolution on the 4th of July.
Considering the entire premise of their namesake is built around the 4th of July and freedom and America and patriotism and bald eagles, beating the Revs on Independence Day felt a little ironic. But, hey, a win’s a win!

Fireworks shortly followed the game, but FC Dallas was sure to make some fireworks of their own in their smash and grab 3-0 victory at Toyota Stadium Saturday night.
Once again, it was the usual suspects of Mauro Diaz and Fabian Castillo who lit up the scoreboard for FC Dallas on the night.
Within the first 15 minutes, Mauro Diaz put the hosts on top after David Texeira earned a free kick at the top of the box (notice: that is the last time you will find me mentioning Tex’s name in this article. He was, once again, anonymous in this outing).
On the ensuing kick, Diaz rifled a low shot underneath the jumping feet of the Rev wall and beat the keeper at his near post. To be fair, it was a bit fortuitous. Beating the goalie at his near post and going underneath the wall on a free kick are two things that had coaches all over the nation cringing.

The second goal was once again engineered by the Argentinian. While pressing back on defense, Mauro deflected a pass the ran down the right wing. At the endline, he played a knifing ball back to the top of the box that was met by Castillo.
Fabian’s initial effort was stopped by Bobby Shuttleworth in the Rev’s goal. Then, in a calamity of defensive errors, the defensive clearance ricocheted off a defender and straight to Castillo who contorted his body to finish past Shuttleworth for FC Dallas’ second.
Yet again, Mauro Diaz finished off the impressive victory with a fantastic buildup and a peach of a pass to Michael Barrios whose one-touch finish nestled sublimely into the bottom right corner of the net. It was a finishing goal fitting for an incredible night of team play.
Two wins in a row find FCD right back in the thick of things in the tightly contested Western Conference. With a game in hand, 4th placed FCD can vault into a tie for the top spot with Vancouver and Seattle if they can find a way to reel off a third win next week against Orlando City.
Thankfully, FCD will be taking on an OCSC team without their star player, Kaka. After receiving the first straight red card of his career, the former AC Milan and Real Madrid man will have to watch this one from the stands.
I keep referring to the ship that needs to be righted if FC Dallas is going to seriously contend in this season’s MLS playoffs. At least as of now, the ship is no longer taking on water.
Diaz and Castillo are standing on the deck with buckets to get rid of what water may still be keeping this team from firing on all cylinders.
