Dallas Cowboys #3 Cornerback
The Primary Competitors: Byron Jones and Morris Claiborne
Early Favorite: Byron Jones
The Dallas Cowboys’ 3rd CB is essentially a starter, since the Cowboys line up in nickel defense more than they do in their base 43 using a SAM. It’s hard not to peg Byron Jones for the spot considering how oft-injured and disappointing Mo Claiborne has been over the years.
But as I pointed out a week ago – Morris Claiborne’s talent is still there and he has the potential to breakout this season if he keeps his head on straight and stays healthy. In nickel formations, the Cowboys are expected to move Orlando Scandrick inside to cover the slot, and insert either Claiborne or Jones at RCB.
Staying healthy is key for the players in this battle. Tyler Patmon is also fighting for a spot and the coaching staff is high on him. Corey White joins the group as Sterling Moore’s replacement as the versatile DB who can tackle. It’s possible he or even Byron Jones play some snaps as the FS when lining up in a single high safety formation.
