FC Dallas See Their Five-Game Winning Streak Snapped
By Curry Goff
Talk about flipping the script.
Spirits were high heading into yesterday evening’s encounter with Eastern Conference bottom-dwellers, the Chicago Fire. No team in MLS was hotter than our hometown heroes, and no team seemed too imposing to stand in their way.
Five wins in five games had lifted FC Dallas out of the limbo that is the cutoff for the Western Conference playoff spots, and vaulted them into first place. They were coming off of impressive wins over DC United, Portland, and Orlando City.

The attack seemed lethal, the defense, impervious. Everything was cruising along, the goals overflowethed. It was beautiful. We were on top of the world, we FCD faithful.
Unfortunately, the wide world of soccer has a way of making even the mightiest of teams fall back down from atop their perch and eat a nice, big slice of humble pie.
That’s exactly what happened to FC Dallas yesterday evening, as they fell on the road to the Chicago Fire by a final score of 2-0, a tally that flattered our boys. If not for a few chances that went awry and a handful of fine saves from Dan Kennedy, this game could very well have been done and dusted long before the final whistle.
We really should have seen this coming, FC Dallas fans. The writing was on the wall. And, believe it or not, this has happened before.

Let me take you on a journey to a time not so long ago.
FC Dallas was in first place. They were on a 4-match unbeaten streak. They were coming off of an impressive performance against a team from the Northwest. Before that, they had beaten a serious playoff contender and a team that they had struggled against in the past.
Then, in a smash and grab performance, a lowly, bottom-dwelling home team comes up and snatches three points right from under our noses. Everyone who watches the game stands there, amazed and confused, and wonders, “How in the world did that just happen?”
That storyline is from the first 5 weeks of this season. The impressive performance against a team from the Northwest: a 0-0 draw against Seattle while playing the majority of the match with 10 men. The serious playoff contender: SKC. The smash and grab, lie on the mat, punch in the gut performance: Colorado.
Flash forward to this past month.
The impressive performance against a team from the Northwest: the 4-1 drumming of the Portland Timbers. The serious playoff contender: DC United. The smash and grab, kick to the pants, flat performance: Chicago.
All this to say, this isn’t the first time that we’ve seen FC Dallas build us up (buttercup, baby) just to let us down. It’s happened before, and it’ll probably happen again.
However, if there’s any consolation from all this, it’s that we’ve seen how this team can recover from such a shock to the system. It’s not time to throw away our jerseys and worry too much about how we’ve lost 10 points to two of the worst teams in the league this year (Colorado and Chicago).
This team has what it takes to turn a seemingly catastrophic loss into a demolition next time around. They’ve done it once. I’ll bet that they’ll do it twice.
