The Dallas Cowboys Look Nasty (so far)

facebooktwitterreddit

Two weeks ago I wrote an article that the Dallas Cowboys need to be nasty (you can find it here). After the first few days of training camp, it looks like they either read the article, or that was their plan all along.

The chippy play between the WRs and the DBs are really nothing new, whether you’re looking at the Dallas Cowboys, or any other team in the league. What was surprising is there seems to be a little bit of “The Nasty” across the whole field. This is a team that wants to lay it all on the line, something different from the Wade Phillips era, or even early Jason Garrett era.

So far, the Dez Bryant and Tyler Patmon skirmish has been the highlight of “the nasty” in camp. Not only were there heated words, but there was the helmet ripping, punches thrown, and jaw-jacking. This sends a message to team. Players are here to fight. If  a guy like Tyler Patmon stands up to an All-Pro like Dez Bryant, then everyone should be fighting regardless of pedigree. This team needs fire on defense.

But this type of nasty wasn’t the only incident or indication so far. Sure, it was the most visible, but being nasty isn’t always about throwing fists or getting in someones face. The Tony Romo to Dez Bryant pass on the sidelines that has been floating around the web the last few days is another case.

Dez went on an out pattern and jumped up to grab a ball on a very nice play. If you listen to the video you can hear Jason Garrett say to “Dial it back a bit.” Garrett thought the play was a little dangerous and he didn’t want an injury, but Tony and Dez just wanted to make a play and play full bore. I loved that they were playing like it was a game, sure I would have been upset had someone gotten hurt, but it showed a fire on offense that is also needed.

There are other instances that that show this team wants to fight.  If you watch some of the clips of training camp, you will see a little extra push here and there from the DBs, the DL, the OL, WRs, and from time to time you can hear the coaches getting into it.

This is good, because it shows that the Dallas Cowboys are looking to get nasty. That’s something they have been missing for so long, but things seem to be changing now.

Now that the first few days are done, I would look for more of this from the team. Watch how RBs hit a hole, a LB comes downhill, and of course, when you watch the Dallas Cowboys you need to watch Dez Bryant every play.

So far so good, and it looks like they are doing exactly what they need to do. It will be fun to watch to see if they can keep this up. If so, this could be a scary team on both sides of the ball and on special teams.

It is good to see “The Nasty”.
