Dallas Cowboys Will Win By Any Means Necessary

The Dallas Cowboys are a winning organization with five Super Bowl rings, 8 Super Bowl appearances, and 34 playoff victories. They boast the All Time rushing leader and had a legendary coach who racked up 20 straight winning seasons. The Cowboys won so many games, dominated so many teams and created so many rivalries, they became “America’s Team”

And most hated team.

In a lot of ways, the Cowboys were the original trailblazers in the NFL, because of the way they drafted and founded players. The Cowboys were the first team to have “Pro Days” way back in the 1960’s when they were going to colleges and evaluating players they had an interest in, like Hall of Famer Mel Renfro out of  Oregon. The Cowboys were also the first team to draft track stars and turn them into elite football players, like Hall of Famer Bob Hayes, an Olympic track star out of Florida A&M University.

The Cowboys were using statistics and generating data on players with computers long before there was Google or the new data toy called “Analytics”.  They were getting the goods on players to help create a long standing dynasty. The Cowboys were one of the first to draft football players from the service Academies like Roger Staubach, even though Staubach had a five year commitment to the Navy as an Officer.

Another HOFer.

GM Tex Schramm and Tom Landry had the foresight to keep Staubach’s rights. The Cowboys always had an interesting way of finding players. And keeping them, too. Regardless of the player’s behavior.

Back in the mid 1970’s, the Cowboys dealt with a troublesome player named Thomas Henderson, known as  “Hollywood Henderson. The talented LB was a cocaine addict who helped the Cowboys win SB XII against the Denver Broncos. Henderson was so hooked on cocaine that he used it during SB XIII against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

In his autobiography, “Out of Control,” Henderson says this,

"“I pulled out my inhaler. The Orange Bowl holds about 80,000 screaming fans, plus there were about 200 million watching worldwide on TV, and there I was on the sideline taking a couple of major snorts in front of them all. We lost that day. I lost that day. I was out of control.”"

Henderson’s bad behavior reached its pinnacle after he said he drank some gin “and snorted a noseful of coke in the lavatory” on the plane ride back from a loss against the Washington Redskins.  Needless to say he cursed out some coaches and a tearful Landry released him the next day.

Although Henderson was a “bad boy” for four years, the Cowboys kept him on the roster because he was talented. Fast forward to 2015 and the Cowboys are doing the same thing. But with different circumstances, to some extent.

This past year the Cowboys drafted Randy Gregory, signed Greg Hardy, and signed FA La’el Collins. Collins is an exception by all accounts and I will discuss that later.

Gregory was a top 10 pick out of Nebraska. According to some experts, a top 5 five pick. However, Gregory slipped to the second round because of a failed drug test at the NFL combine. His desire to smoke weed with a combine on the horizon scared away so many teams that the talented defensive lineman wasn’t selected until the next day at number 60. All because of smoking weed.

But it didn’t scare away the Cowboys because they needed a pass rusher badly.

Hardy was signed as a FA after he was accused and found guilty by a judge in Charlotte, N.C. of Domestic Violence. However, the charges were dismissed after the accuser didn’t show up for court. Supposedly, according to the DA, she received a payday from Hardy. Commissioner Roger Goodell handed Hardy a 10 game suspension that was reduced to four games.

The saddest case of all is La’el Collins. Like Gregory, Collins was supposed to be a top 10 pick out of LSU. However, before the draft, the Police in Baton Rouge, Louisiana said they wanted to talk to Collins about the murder of Brittney Mills, a pregnant woman he supposedly had a previous relationship with. As a result, all 32 teams avoided Collins like the plague and didn’t draft him.

Collins was never a murder suspect, according to the Baton Rouge Police. Eventually, Baton Rouge Police ruled him out. By then, his dream was crushed. Spirit broken. Although the Cowboys were one of a few teams who showed interest in Collins, some teams still shied away from him.

After Jerry Jones reached out to Collins and showed him the rich history of the Dallas Cowboys, Collins signed as the biggest FA in Cowboys history since Deion Sanders. An emotional Jones showed that rare side of himself at Collins’ introductory press conference.

Note: In no way am I suggesting Collins is a bad person because he was questioned about the murder of his pregnant ex girlfriend. Thank God the man was cleared. No one deserves that type of scrutiny when they are innocent, as is the case with Collins. I’m just highlighting how the  Cowboys signed a FA who many teams steered clear of.

The Cowboys didn’t have to sign Collins, considering they already have a stellar offensive line, but signing Collins shows you how bad the Cowboys want to win.

Win right now.

So history tells us the Cowboys will put up with bad behavior or do whatever it takes to win a SB. It’s happened in every decade. Back in the 90’s, during its Super Bowl run, the Cowboys had a hide out they called the “White House”. This notorious house held all types of activities.

Allegedly, several Cowboys’ players were seen with different women and doing drugs. You get the point without all of the specifics.

This happened while the Cowboys were winning SB’s.

It’s always been that way.

And it will continue to be that way.

Because history says the Cowboys will win by any means necessary.
