Cold Month of August For FC Dallas
By Curry Goff
Last I checked, it’s not a good thing to go an entire month without winning a single point…but, there’s always next week.
I’m getting a little tired of writing stories about how FC Dallas has been up and down and up and down and back up again and back down again. But here we go again.

The latest trend is in the downward direction (so there should be a pick-me-up here in about a month or so…) to the tune of three losses in a row for FCD. The month of August, normally a fruitful one for our hometown boys, has been a struggle.
To add a bit of insult to injury, it’s not the best time to lose three in a row, especially with the playoff race in the Western Conference tightening up by the week. As it stands now, FCD sit in 5th place, just two points back of a tie for third with Sporting KC and Portland.
The fact that FC Dallas was in first place not too long ago goes to show you just how tightly contested the Western Conference really is.

Ahead of Sporting KC and Portland sit the LA Galaxy, undoubtedly the frontrunner for the MLS Cup at this late stage of the season. Robbie Keane’s five minute, two goal outburst against FCD just goes to show what a number of those players are capable of at any given moment.
Need another reason to be afraid of LA? Just watch their highlights from this weekend’s game. Albeit they were playing against NYCFC, but still…
If we’re looking on the bright side here, oddly enough, even though FCD have lost three in a row and LA seems unstoppable with the trio of Gio, Gerrard, and Keane, FC Dallas could actually leap frog LA if they win their games in hand.
The Galaxy have 46 points through 27 games; FCD have 38 points through 24 games. That means that if FCD win those three games in hand, they would have 47 points, one more than LA. That may not be good enough for first place, considering Sporting KC have played 24 games and have 40 points, but what a strange, strange prospect…
Winning those three games in hand is no small task, however. Real Salt Lake is one that you can maybe chalk up in the win column, but Columbus Crew will be a tough ask. NYCFC, well, let’s hope that one will be a tally in the win column, otherwise we could be in for a rough end to the season.
When you follow that up with Sporting KC and LA again, you begin to see just how crucial those three games in hand could be to FC Dallas’ run to the postseason.
I have a feeling that the up and down season is probably going to continue. My honest prediction: FCD will win two out of those three games in hand, leaving themselves in a pretty favorable position and all of us in a tizzy, and then slide a bit more with a loss or two against SKC and LA. We’ll probably eke out a 3rd or 4th placed spot in the conference.
Who knows? It’s hard to tell where the end of the season will fall on the FC Dallas rollercoaster ride.
